NYC Seminar • Gil Tunnell, PhD and David Greenan, EdD, LMFT
Courage, Compassion and Basic Goodness: Applying AEDP to Couple Therapy
Registration begins at 1:30 pm
Seminar runs from 2 pm to 5 pm
Social Hour follows at 5 pm
David Greenan, EdD, LMFT, is a professor (adjunct) in Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is in full-time private practice in New York City. He is the former executive director of the Minuchin Center for the Family and is also on faculty at NYU-Bellevue Hospital Center. Having an expertise in working with poor inner-city families and same-sex couples, he currently is focusing on how to design a treatment model that helps couples-in-distress both identify and heal trauma so that their innate strengths can be activated.
Drs. Greenan and Tunnell are the co-authors of Couple Therapy with Gay Men (Guilford Publications, 2003), as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.
Couples must summon a tremendous amount of courage to enter treatment. By praising their courage, affirming their strengths, honoring their desire to strengthen their attachment, and explicitly expressing and modeling empathy, therapists can help the couple develop compassion for Self and Other as they address their current relational issues, as well as heal traumatic events that may have blocked intimacy. The presenters will demonstrate with videotaped sessions an interdisciplinary approach that utilizes aspects of (a) mindfulness practice, (b) Structural Family Therapy, (c) Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, and (d) Attachment Theory. Building upon innate basic goodness and the inherent resiliency and transformance strivings of all beings, treatment helps the couple forge more intimate connections.
