The Alchemy of Authenticity: Transforming Hostility and Avoidance with AEDP

an AEDP Workshop at Mount Sinai West (formerly Roosevelt Hospital) in New York City

with Benjamin Lipton, LCSW

When patients present with hostility or avoidance, they are implicitly communicating a history of attachment trauma that is haunting them in the here and now. Feelings of shame, rage and contempt, beliefs of hopelessness and helplessness, and an interpersonal disposition of mistrust are all external signals of what’s happening neurobiologically in response to deeply wired-in expectations of threat. AEDP—with its demonstrated success in “operationalizing” research findings on attachment and neurobiology—offers specific methods for setting in motion a person’s positive transformational processes toward healing even in the face of dominant forces of hostility and avoidance that perceive such opportunities as threats to one’s very survival. Using videos of actual therapy sessions as well as opportunities for experiential practicing of what you will be learning, this workshop will demonstrate specific relational and somato-sensory strategies for working with challenging defensive legacies of significant attachment trauma.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the neurobiological underpinnings of hostility and avoidance
  • Apply two specific AEDP strategies for positively engaging and softening hostility
  • Detect moment-to-moment, emergent experiences of safety and connection
  • Apply two specific AEDP interventions for transforming shame into safe-enough vulnerability
  • Apply two specific AEDP strategies for regulating anxiety
  • Explain the essential role of authenticity in working with attachment trauma and utilize this understanding in their clinical work
